The Q&A Archives: Mulch for early-seaon Crops

Question: What types of mulch are needed for my early season crops? I am concerned about providing enough nutrients to my heavy feeders such as broccoli and cabbage, without burning my young carrot, spinach, and lettuce shoots. And do my peppers and tomatoesrequire a different mulch that will provide more heat? Any suggestion are appreciated.

Answer: Any good, fluffy, well-decomposed organic matter is an ideal mulch for all of the vegetables you mentioned. I would only suggest that you allow the soil to warm to the point where the summer vegetables are actively growing before applying a mulch.
