| Containers for growing dwarf fruit trees may include those made from plastic, metal, clay, ceramic, or wood, as long as there is adequate drainage provided. A general rule of thumb, however, is to start with a container approximately six inches wider than that from which the tree is initially placed in at the nursery. Not all fruit trees will grow well in containers for long periods of time. If you want to grow a fruit tree in a container, you'll want to repot as the tree grows - probably every couple of years. If you don't want to repot you can generally use a container that measures 18 - 24 inches wide and about the same depth. Larger containers can be used as well. Wine barrels cut in half are often used. It really doesn't matter the material of the container as long as there is adequate drainage. |
