IS IT HARD TO GROW ZOYSIA GRASS IN LAS VEGAS NEVADA? I WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT AND IT WOULD SAVE ON MY WATERING ACCORDING TO THERE ADD AND IT SUPPOSE TO LOVE THE HEAT TOO. WHAT DO YOU THINK BEFORE I SPEND A LOT MONEY ON IT? WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD FERTILIZER TO MAINTAIN THIS TYPE OF GRASS? I SEE THAT THEY RECOMMEND THERE BRAND TO USE ON IT.
THANK YOU.

Zoysia grass is a turfgrass capable of surviving severe winters, summers and erratic rainfall. It is desirable because it can tolerate as much shade as St. Augustine and as much drought as Bermuda grass. The grass is also disease resistant and traffic tolerant. It grows slowly (it takes two years for a lawn plugged with Zoysia to fill in) so the recommended establishment procedure is to use solid sod. The two Zoysia varieties most available are Meyer and Emerald. Zoysia grass is slow growing and performs best when mowed every week. A reel-type mower is favored but not necessary if the lawn is mowed frequently (weekly). Plugs are 1" to 2" squares cut from Zoysia grass sod. These can be planted in a prepared planting bed from 6" to 12" apart. Plugs allow you to economically cover your yard area for much less than solid sod. Because Zoysia grass is a slow grower you will wait two years or more for a fully grown-in lawn, depending on growing conditions in your area. This may be perfectly acceptable depending on your needs. Zoysia is used in playfields and parks in many areas of the country.

Another way to conserve water is to keep the lawn area to a minimum size and use bermuda for summer green, overseeded with rye or bluegrass for winter green. As long as the grass is deep rooted, it will use a minimum amount of water. To encourage deep rooting, water deeply once each week.
