The Q&A Archives: flowering trees

Question: I live in Michigan and see the prettiest flowering trees all over right now. They have purple flowers and spindly branches. I would like to know the name so I can purchase one for my yard.

Answer: Without seeing the tree I can only offer an educated guess. I think it is an eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) tree. They are in full bloom now on the campus of Michigan State University. Redbud trees are easily found in most garden centers. Look now while they are in bloom and you can probably identify one from a distance the minute you enter the nursery.
