The Q&A Archives: dahlias

Question: I pulled Dahlias last season and this year they are dry and pruny will they grow? also very hard. they were kept in a cool dry place.
Paula/ Boston

Answer: Your dahlia tubers should be plump, not shriveled. I'd plant them anyway. They may plump up when they go into moist soil. I think it's worth a try - they may grow and look beautiful for you this summer.

When storing dahlia tubers, a cool, dry location is important, but they should also be checked periodically during the winter to make sure they are not drying out. If they begin to shrivel, you can mist them with water and pack them in peat moss.

Best wishes with your dahlias!
