The Q&A Archives: Zoysia lawn

Question: I'm in the lower south zone, B'ham AL. The front yard faces south and no trees. Zoysia and the new growth is very slow this Spring. Should we cut it low now and rake out the old brown grass from winter?

Answer: You're absolutely right. In the spring of the year, zoysiagrass lawns may be mowed at the lowest setting on your mower to remove dead leaf tissue. This increases the greenup rate and allows easier and more uniform mowing during the growing season. The mowing height should be raised in September by 1/2 to 1 inch in preparation for fall. If you bag your clippings you may not need to rake out the old, dead grass - it should be sucked up when you mow.

Best wishes with your lawn.
