I HAD 3 HOSTAS PLANTED ON ONE SIDE, AND 5 ON THE OTHER. THE SIDE W/3 ONLY 2 CAME UP, DOING WELL. THE SIDE W/5 ONLY 2 ARE COMING, BUT SOMETHING IS EATING THEM IN THE GROUND. THEY HAVE LITTLE HOLES ALL IN THE LEAVES. HELP. SOMETHING IS KILLING MY HOSTAS. I WANTED TO PLANT 2 MORE, BUT WHY IF THEY WERE JUST GOING TO GET EATEN UP WITH HOLES. ONE LOOKS LIKE IT IS DYING. I ALSO SEARCHED FOR TYPES THAT ARE BETTER IN THE SUN, BUT THE SUN IS NOT WHAT IS AFFECTING THESE,THERE IS LITERALLY HOLES IN THEM WHEN THEY COME UP.

Based on your description it sounds like there are slugs (or snails) eating your plants. These are nocturnal and leave behind a silvery trail. You can handpick them at night and drop them into soapy water, or you can bait them with slug traps using stale beer, or you can use one of the new controls formulated with iron phosphate as the active ingredient (such as Sluggo). Another control is to sprinkle diatomaceous earth on the soil around the plants. Read and follow the label directions on any product you use. I hope this helps!
