To begin my question, I would first like to inquire as to when it is time to actually plant my annuals, what can i put in the hole to produce long lasting annuals. should I use potting soil with fertilizer.

also, in my back yard I have a cascading waterfall that adds to the beauty of my backyard, it is an assest to my 'outdoor living room' working 12-14 hrs a day in our own business, when I do come home, when we do sit on our colonial wrap around porch, i want to be able to admire my pond with beautiful peaceful annuals. I have always planted shades of purple, lavender and a tinge of peach-accomplishing this thru impatients. I have numerous perennials - hostas, iris' - entertwined among the shrubs - holly, pine trees, japanese drawf maples, etc. WHAT ANNUALS DO YOU FEEL THAT I SHOULD PLANT TO MAKE FOR A BEAUTIFUL PEACEFUL 'PHOTO', I AM NOT A RED PERSON AT ALL, WHITE FADES AWAY INTO THE SUNRISE, AND PLEASE GIVE ME THE NAMES OF THE ANNUALS SO I KNOW WHAT I AM TO PURCHASE.
i ALSO HAVE SOME BRIGHTER YELLOWISH SHRUBS THAT i JUST DON'T KNOW THE NAMES OF AND I ALWAYS TRY TO CREATE A TRIANGLE OF THE SAME SHADES OF SHRUBS, ETC.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! SINCERELY, CLAUDIA

I can't identify your shrubs without seeing them but I'll bet if you cut off a stem and take it to your local garden center you (or the staff) will be able to match the shrub.

The most well-known annuals with purple flowers are: Angelonia or Summer Snapdragon, Asters, Bellflowers, Calibrachoa, Cape Daisy, Dianthus, Fan Flower or Scaevola, Flossflower or Ageratum, Fountain Grass, Heliotrope, Lobelia, Martha Washington Geraniums, Mexican Heather, Nemesia or Paintbox, Pansy, Petunias, Phlox, Pinks, Salvia or Sage, Sweet William, Twinspur or Diascia, Verbena and Wishbone Flower.

Annuals live only for one season so lots of soil preparation isn't necessary. Just loosen the soil, plant your annuals and keep them well watered. They should reward you with season-long color. Enjoy!
