The Q&A Archives: Arborvitae

Question: How far apart should arborvitae be planted - am putting in 5-6 foot trees?

Answer: Spacing depends on the mature width of your arborvitaes. The tags on the plants should indicate the mature width; space them that far apart so they have room to grow and closer if you want them to grow into a hedge. For instance, Emerald Green Arborvitae grows 15' tall and 2-3' wide. If you want them to grow into a thick hedge, plant them 3' apart. American Arborvitae should be spaced about 5' apart. Hope this information helps you space your plants just right!
