Hardy hibiscus will grow outdoors in your gardening region. Tropical hibiscus is frost-tender and will need to be taken indoors over the winter months. If you don't know which kind you have, here are the differences: the leaves of the hardy hibiscus are more dull and light green, the tropical hibiscus leaves are very shiny, dark green. Hardy hibiscus has an upright growth habit and can reach 3 feet tall; Tropical hibiscus is more shrubby.
