how to get rid of thrips that have sickened my daylillies for several years. Tried treating with various products before I knew the cause and with Bonide mite-x and their systemic granules last summer. Is there a better product?

I think you're taking the right strategy: Add systemic to soil (such as Marathon), or spray with Orthene (or any pesticide labeled for Thrip). The location of the insects makes it difficult to reach them with insecticides. Good luck with your daylilies!
