The Q&A Archives: hibiscus spp plant

Question: I got a hibiscus ssp plant for mothers day, does this have to be kept in the house or can it be planted outside. It says houseplant on tag but I thought they could be planted outside.

Answer: If your hibiscus is labeled "houseplant" it is probably the tropical hibiscus (glossy leaves, huge flowers) and will not be hardy outdoors in your gardening climate. There is a hardy hibiscus (called Rose-of-Sharon) that can be planted outdoors. This plant has dull green leaves and lots of small flowers. What you can do with your plant is enjoy it outdoors during the summer months and then take it indoors before temperatures fall to around 50F.
