| There are several animals that might eat hostas including rabbits, woodchucks, and especially deer. (Slugs will also eat hostas. They are nocturnal but leave heind a silvery trail. Slugs can be controlled using an iron-phosphate based bait.) The animals can sometimes be repelled using a granular or spray-on product labeled for the specific animal that is causing the problem. There are several different brands on the market such as Liquid Fence, Hinder and Shake-Away, etc. Some gardeners also report success using Milorganite or dried blood sprinkled on the soil between the plants.
