| I have a hosta that was practically dead last year. Now it has come back. I really need to move this plant. How deep should I dig to get the plant out and what's the best type of soil to use? We are in Lake Tahoe. What zone really are we in? Sincere thanks for any help you are able to give me. |
| You're in USDA zone 5. Hosta roots will be concentrated in a mass, directly below the plant and as wide as the plant. Expect them to be in the top 8-10" of soil and start your digging at the edge of the leaves. While they will grow in average, well draining soils, they appreciate well amended soils so why not add some compost or aged-manure to the soil when you're planting them?
