The Q&A Archives: Flowers for Western Exposure

Question: I'm new to gardening and looking for suggestions for flowers for my new deck. My deck faces West so it gets lots of sun and is very exposed. Since we are also on the lake, the deck can often be a windy place. Do you have any suggestions as to what types of flowers would be successful in this situation? Thank you. Bonnie Spohn Schmaltz Richmond, MN

Answer: Some nice annual flowers to grow on your deck in full sun are geraniums, nasturiums, portulaca, petunias (I like 'Purple Wave'- a great groundcover type), dwarf marigolds, torenia and verbena. Generally, look for dwarf plants that stay low so the wind won't effect them as much..
