What can one do to keep the weeds from overtaking an asparagus patch? It is about 4x3 feet and pulling doesn't seem to help. There is burdock and other weeds that over take it every year. Can Roundup be used when it is dormant like in the spring before it comes out of the ground? We battle this every year. Thank you.

I'm afraid Round Up will kill your asparagus plants, even when they're dormant. It can be a real chore to keep an asparagus patch weed-free. My method is to pull up as many weeds as possible early in the season. Then, in late spring I apply 2-4" layer of compost over the entire bed. I then lay several layers of newspapers in the rows, and mulch over them with straw or bark mulch to smother the weeds. I still have to weed a little between the plants, but it keeps the chore manageable. Good luck!
