Hi,

Are there any trees I can put in my yard to soak up standing water? There is a drainage ditch in my subdivision that ends in my yard and I have a problem with stagnant water. Do you think some weeping willow trees would do it? I was looking for a more natural solution - not a bunch of French drains, etc...

Thanks!

What you describe sounds like a perfect site for a rain garden - a place where water collects after rainfall. Here's a link to a pamphlet about rain gardens:

http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/ORG...

And, here's a list of trees recommended for wet sites:
Red Maple, Acer rubrum
Shadblow, Amelanchier arborea
River Birch, Betula nigra
Gray Birch, Betula populifolia
Red-Panicled Dogwood, Cornus racemosa
White Ash, Fraxinus americana
Green Ash, Fraxinus pennsylvanica
Witchhazel, Hammamelis virginiana
Red Cedar, Juniperus virginiana
American Sweetgum, Liquidambar styraciflua
Tupelo, Nyssa sylvatica
American Hop Hornbeam, Ostrya virginiana
Swamp White Oak, Quercus bicolor
Pin Oak, Quercus palustris
Red Oak, Quercus rubra

Armed with the above information you should be able to turn the drainage ditch area into an attractive rain garden.

Best wishes with your landscape!
