The Q&A Archives: Flowers For A Hot Climate

Question: I love flowers and want to plant a lot of them at my new home; however, the weather is very hot in the summer and fairly cold in the winter (30-40 degrees. What are some other appropriate flowering shrubs I can plant that like the hot sun?

Answer: You'll probably be happiest with plants adapted to arid places. Try Acacia, Desert Honeysuckle, Bottlebrush, Ceanothus, Cistus, Myrtle and Escallonia as flowering shrubs. Add Artemisia, Desert Marigold, Coreopsis Gaillardia, Knipbofia, Evening Primrose, Mullein, Zinnia and Watsonia for perennial bloom. Winter low temperatures of 30F to 40F are not really very cold. The above plants will be hardy, and will perform well in your garden.
