Here in zone 4 I long for even one zone warmer, so zone 5 sounds pretty good. There are several good books published by Storey Publishing that would cover the basics in your region. I find their books to be "to the point" and practical. A good general book for northern climates is Cold-Climate Gardening by Lewis Hill. Successful Perennial Gardening by Lewis & Nancy Hill is another of their titles. A good overall vegetable book is Burpee's The Complete Vegetable and Herb Gardener by Karan Davis Cutler, published by Macmillan. For more season-extending ideas, Eliot Coleman's Four-Season Harvest, published by Chelsea Green, is excellent. Enjoy the reading, and, of course, the gardening!
