I want to put down some mulch around some plants and trees. Someone told me I could lay newspaper down instead of a weed blocker that you buy. Is this true? Any other suggestions? I had bought some of the Scott's mulch (black). Thanks!

Yes, you can use newspaper and it will last 2-3 years (weed block material lasts about 5 years). You can use 3-4 sheets of newspaper - don't make it any thicker or water will have trouble penetrating and draining off. After laying the newspaper layer, cover with your mulch. It will hide the paper and also keep it from blowing away.

Best wishes with your garden!
