The Q&A Archives: Green Weeping Willow

Question: Hello,

We just purchased two Green Weeping Pussy Willows from our local home depot. The tag says they are a shade tree. I thought they were ornamental. It also says thaat they will grow 15-18 feet and be 12 to 15 feet wide. Have you seen them that size. We live in southern Ohio.

Thank you.

Answer: Weeping Pussy Willow is Salix caprea 'pendula'. It will grow 8-10' high and 6'-10' wide. It grows best in full sunshine but will tolerate some shade. I think the reference to shade tree means it will cast some shade (but at that size, and growth habit I wouldn't expect much!)

Hope this clarifies things for you.
