Just moved into a new house in bakersfield, ca.
the backyard is nothing but dirt, I plan on planting grass but would also like a few roses. My question is which roses will actually thrive in my in my climate and how long before they reach maturity?

Roses with thrive in your Bakersfield garden. I'm partial to hybrid tea roses, but you could plant climber or standard roses, as well. Hybrid teas to consider include Mister Lincoln, Sheer Magic, Wildfire, Ronald Reagan, Voluptuous!, Bella'roma, Mother's Rose, Change of Heart, Nancy Reagan, Welcome Home, Spellbound, Tahitian Sunset, and Melody Parfum?e.

Climbers include Don Juan, Social Climber, Scent from Above, Sally Holmes?, Blaze of Glory, Stairway to Heaven, High Society and Dream Weaver.

Shrub roses include Good ?n Plenty, Wild Thing, Cherries ?n? Cream, and Plum Frost.

You're wise in planning your flower beds before installing your lawn. By the time you have all your shrubs and perennials installed, the weather will be just right for seeding or sodding your new lawn. (fall is the best time to seed)

Best wishes with your new landscape!
