| They are very similar, being varieties of Buxus microphylla japonica or Japanese Boxwood. Japanese boxwood takes dry conditions and alkaline soil. It grows slowly, usually to 4-6 feet. Buxus microphylla japonica 'Green Beauty' is hardier than common Japanese boxwood (to -10 degrees), maintains a deep green color in cold weather and stays mostly green in hot weather. B.m.j. 'Winter Gem' is the hardiest of all the Japanese boxwoods. If you plant them together you'll notice a difference in the leaf color but the leaf texture and shape will be the same. |
