| Hi We recently purchased and planted a young live oak tree at the beginning of April. We have just noticed that the leaves are turning brown and we don't know why. Is there something that we need to do. The tree is watered twice a week with our sprinkler system and sometimes we water by hand if we think it needs it. I also have a queen crepe myrtle tree, which is currently in bloom, but I have noticed that the leaves do not look healthy, they are new leaves, but they have started to yellow and turn brown. | Karen, I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. Your Live Oak tree sounds like it may be suffering from poor aeration in the roots caused by overwatering. Both a lack of water and soggy wet soil conditions can be very damaging to roots. If you put fertilizer and planting hole this can burn roots since most fertilizers or salt-based products and when concentrated are damaging to roots. Dig down a few inches into the soil and feel at to see if it is dry or wet and then water accordingly. Consider fertilizing these trees if they haven't been fertilized previously this year using a lawn type fertilizer at the right recommended on the bag for turfgrass. If the trees don't respond to this consider taking some photos to your County Extension Office for them to view and perhaps diagnose some other issue that may be going on. Thanks for the question.
