I have two Ash trees that have not leafed yet. They have fuzzy greenery on the branches in blotches and greenery coming out of the trunks (not branches) everywhere. My other Ash trees are already in full leaf. Are these trees distressed? They are young, about three years old.

The growth you describe doesn't sound normal at all. In fact, it sounds a great deal like herbicide damage. If you sprayed weed killer near the bases of the trees, or if the trees are growing in or near a lawn and you applied a broadleaf weed killer to your lawn, the roots could be affected. Young trees are quite sensitive to herbicides and will react by sending out distorted foliage. Your trees may outgrow this so watch for another year. If they look the same next spring, they should be replaced.

Good luck with your trees!
