Our Black Mission Fig tree grows large figs, but since fruit
has large blossom end holes it allows bugs to enter, spoiling the figs. Short of chopping the tree down what can be done?

For best taste, allow figs to fully ripen on the tree, but pick as they ripen or the dried fruit beetle will enter the open end. Spoilage or souring is caused by microorganisms in fully ripened fruit. These organisms are carried into the open eye of the fruit by insects. Don't chop down the tree, just harvest daily, and remove overripe, spoiled fruit.
