We have 4 dogs that stay outside while we're at work, so we want to create a great space for them in the back; we just finished xeriscaping the front(ourselves) & like it; have 4 HUGE old oaks & persimmon giving shade so limited grass will grow; what do you suggest to keep the pups cool & comfy?

Jennifer,

That is a tough one. Dogs are very hard on grass and grass will struggle at best in the shade. I would consider an area mulched to provide a cover over the ground and to prevent muddiness when it rains! You can include shrubs and other shade loving plants in and around the area. I just don't know of a plant that will grow low in a carpet and which can take shade AND dog foot traffic...and digging.

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
