| I have 2 leyland cypress's and 1 of them is turning brown on the inside at the trunk. They are about 5 feet apart and are in good soil. What could be causeing this situation with only one of them? |
| My first reaction would be to check for spider mites. These tiny little pests can cause browning of cypress foliage, especially towards the center of the plant. Spider mites like dry conditions and inside the plant they are protected from rain and sprays from the hose. Take a piece of plain white paper, hold it inside the plant where the damage occurs and sharply tap on the branch. Spider mites will fall down onto the paper. They look like pepper, but they move. If your cypress has a spider mite infestation, look for a miticide in the garden center and use according to label directions. You can keep these pests from invading your plants by hosing the plants off periodically, being sure to direct the water spray towards the inner branches. Best wishes with your garden! |
