The Q&A Archives: Cleveland Pear

Question: I was given a Cleveland Pear tree as a gift. Can this tree be shaped and kept small? I think of this tree as a commercial one.

What is best tree to shape into an umbrella look?

Answer: Cleveland pears are ornamental trees (no fruit) and will reach a mature size of 20-30 feet high and 15-20 feet wide. While you could prune to keep it about 15' tall by 12' wide, it will never be a really small tree. The canopy is perfectly uniform; it naturally grows in a tight, symmetrical shape - a semi-perfect oval. One of those miracles of nature. Its leaves fill in any gaps creating a near flawless surface area.

If you want a flowering umbrella shaped tree, consider weeping cherry.
