We just bought a new house and need to put grass in the backyard. I understand we need to till, add compost, rake smooth and then sow the seed. In order to keep the seed from blowing away, or birds eating it, what would you recommend covering it with? I have heard straw but think the straw would blow away also. |
Straw would work, but peat moss is best. If you sprinkle less than an inch over the newly broadcast seeds, the peat will help keep the seeds moist and hide the seeds from the birds. As long as you keep the seed bed moist, the peat will not blow away. An added bonus is that the peat will decompose, adding minerals to the soil. Good luck with your new lawn. |
