Answer: Straw would work, but peat moss is best. If you sprinkle less than an inch over the newly broadcast seeds, the peat will help keep the seeds moist and hide the seeds from the birds. As long as you keep the seed bed moist, the peat will not blow away. An added bonus is that the peat will decompose, adding minerals to the soil.
