Bamboo is relatively easy to grow. It needs sunshine and water and it will take off. If you think of it as a giant grass, you'll understand that it needs the same things as your turfgrass needs. The only problem with bamboo is that it can be terribly invasive, especially running bamboo, and if you ever decide you want to remove it from your yard, it may be an impossible task. There are all kinds of clumping bamboos that are attractive and yet easy to contain. I'd look into those before purchasin and planting. Bamboo should be available in most garden centers - phone ahead to save yourself time and gasoline. If you can't find any locally, there are several online sources if you do a web search.

Best wishes with your landscape!
