How do I pick daylilies to bring indoors for display, without them closing up?

I wish there were some magic potion to keep daylilies alive for more than one day, but whether you leave them on the plant or cut to take them indoors, they will die within 24 hours. That's where they got the common name "daylily". They only last for a day. Wish I had better news for you! You might try cutting the flowering stalk off the plant just as the buds have finished forming but before they actually open, immediately plunge the stalk into tepid water (I carry my vase out to the garden when I'm cutting flowers). Each flower bud should open one at a time, but the opened flowers will still only last one day apiece. Hope this works for you!
