My 4 year old Dieffenbachia's stems are starting to bend over and feel rubbery/weak. The leaves are healthy looking and new leaves are growing. I checked to see if it needed repotting, but the roots are not crowded - in fact the opposite seems to be true, the root system seems small for this tall, 4 yr old plant. It gets med light and slightly dry soil. What could be happening?

Weak stem can be the result of too-fast growth; soft, squishy areas on the stem or soft squishy spots on leaves are from bacterial damage. Usually this is too much water in the winter when the plant is not getting sufficient sun. Remove damaged areas with a clean knife, repot and give the plant more light or less water in the winter time.
