I think the best time to water is in the morning. First, it helps prepare the plants for all the growing and flowering they're going to do that day, and second, it gives the leaves a chance to dry out before nightfall. If you water in the afternoon when the temperature is hot and the sun is bearing down on the plants, the water droplets left on the leaves can magnify the sun's rays and cause little burn spots in the leaves. Finally, watering late afternoon or early evening can allow moisture to remain on the plants overnight, which can encourage diseases. So, if you have a choice, water in the morning.

Best wishes with your first garden!
