Floating row covers are great for extending the season. They help protect young plants from frost, and help keep insects and birds away. You can leave row covers on all season for crops that don't need pollination (lettuce, spinach, cabbage, etc.) Floating row covers are made from light, permeable material that allows rain and air to enter, but keeps insects out, and blocks some of the sun's rays. They're usually made of polypropylene or polyester material and will last several seasons if carefully handled.
