The Q&A Archives: Caterpillar Problems

Question: Can you recommend some flowers that caterpillars don't like? I bought some beautiful purple petunias in a container from HD and within 2 days all the petals were eaten by hungry caterpillars. Help!

Answer: There really are no plants, aside from cactus, that some type of caterpillar doesn't find attractive at some time during the growing season. So, you may have to either put up with their feeding or hand pick them. Or, you can use a biocontrol called Bt (bacillus thuriengensis), sold as Dipel. It targets caterpillars but won't harm insects, pets or humans.
