How can I stop my plum trees from shooting up new starts in my lawn and flower beds. Everytime I turn around there is a new shoot somewhere.

I'm afraid there's nothing to recommend other than mowing or cutting the suckers off as soon as they appear. Cherry and plum trees seem to be the worst but crabapples can also send suckers from the root systems. It's just a natural process for these trees. Sorry I can't provide better news.
