My problem is basically my dog. I have a backyard that is not very conducive to gardening. My favorite option is to purchase a hearty ground cover. The yard is showered in sunlight most of the day, and as I mentioned before I have a dog. The main problem is he tramples almost anything I get. What is your suggestion on a hearty ground cover for full sunlight?

Aren't dogs fun? Actually, just about any ground cover will tolerate a bit of Fido's presence... As far as his constant presence and needing a HEARTY ground cover-here are a few:
Ajuga, pachysandra, vinca minor (periwinkle). They are all relatively robust and should work. I've always had dogs, and always had these three at various locations in the garden. The dogs roamed into them, they didn't LIVE in them however. I think perhaps I'd start with the ajuga...it's got the lowest growth habit and would probably be least offended!
