The Q&A Archives: Pruining a Butterfly Bush

Question: I just got a butterfly bush this summer. It is about 6 feet tall. When is the best time to prune it? Do you cut it down to the soil or just so many inches.
Thank you.

Answer: Butterfly bushes are generally pruned in the spring. First remove any winter killed branches and then prune down to whatever height you want. I usually prune mine down to from 6-12" above the soil level. This results in lots of new growth and lots of flowers.
