I have a 3' x 27' raised bed (10") garden. It is next to the north side of the house and the drainage is poor. Please give me some suggestions for plants, either annual flowers or bulbs. The garden receives about 4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day. It is usually comparatively cool in this area.

You can grow a wide array of ornamentals in your cool, moist, partially shady garden: ferns, flag iris, New England aster, hosta, etc. You'll find many of these in Burpee's Summer Perennials catalog. Prairie Moon Nursery (Route 3 Box 163, Winona MN 55987; ph# 507/452-1362) specializes in native wetland and prairie plants if you want to expand your plant pallette beyond the ordinary.
