The bed in the front of my home is raised and much of the water drains off before it can seep into this hard clay "soil". Am looking for a low growing annual that is red and showy form the road that can grow in conditions of hot afternoon sun and drier soil. Have tried begonias and petunias, but was not especially satisfied.
Someone mentioned a red poppy. What do you think? Could you tell me what you think of that or any other choice.
Thank you,
Lisa

Poppies would be beautiful but they aren't low growing (24"). Here are some annual and perennial options: Salvia 'Flare', Snapdragons, Achillea 'Fireland', Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet', Clianthus 'Red Queen', Cosmos 'Sunny Red' (does get a little tall though, 24"), Celosia 'Red Velvet', Ornamental Kale, Geranium, Pentas, Nasturtium 'Empress of India', Phlox 'African Sunset', Salvia 'Lady in Red', Salvia 'Salsa Scarlet Bicolor', Zinnia 'Scarlet Splendor', Zinnia 'Cherry Pinwheel'. All are available from Burpee at 1-800-888-1447.
