I purchased an Indian Magic Crabapple tree which started out well this spring. The top of the tree will not sprout new leaves. I scraped under the bark and it is green underneath so i know the branches are not dead. Also alot of new growth is sprouting at the bottom of the tree. But the top branches do not seem to grow new leaves. It is still alive but i dont understand why the top branches wont show new growth. Can you help me?

Most of the new growth on your crabapple tree will be produced every year in the spring. Since you planted it at that time, I suspect the tree is busy getting its roots established rather than concentrating on top growth. You shold see lots of new topgrowth next spring. As for the the suckers that are sprouting at the base of the tree, you can cut them off or pull them out. Crabapples tend to sucker. they would prefer to grow as a shrub rather than a tree. So if you keep the suckers pruned, your indian magic will look like a tree. Enjoy!
