| A well managed open compost heap shouldn't smell. If the pile is turned every week, even if new material is added, the compost should not smell. But, if you'd rather use an enclosed bin, you can make one yourself. A barrel composter can be built from a 55 gallon drum. Drill 6-9 rows of 1/2" holes over the length of the barrel to let air circulate. Fill 3/4 full of material. Every few days lay it down and roll it over a few times to mix. Use a barrel that has not been used for toxic substances. Or, you can purchase a compost tumbler bin. There are several self-contained units on the market and you can purchase online or at your local garden center. Best wishes with your compost! |
