The Q&A Archives: Persistent Weed

Question: I have a weed that looks a lot like a starfish with many arms. Has single root from center going down into soil. I'm in Durham, NC. Any idea what it is?

Answer: I can't identify the weed by your description but the most common weeds in your area with tap roots and foliage in a star pattern are dandelions and thistle. If you can describe the flower and the leaf shape, we might be able to key it out for you. Or, dig one of the weeds and take it to your local nursery. They should be able to tell you what it is. If not, we look forward to hearing from you!
