| We were recently given several large cuttings from a night blooming cereus. Is it best to root these in soil or another medium? What type of light will the plants tolerate? |
| Night Blooming Cereus are also called Orchid Cacti, and their needs are more like those of orchids, too. They prefer moist, organic soil that has large particles to ensure good drainage. Provide bright, indirect light during spring and summer, and brighter light during the fall and into early spring to ensure bloom. It roots readily given the right conditions. Ideally, the cuts should be allowed to heal in a cool, shady place for 2-3 weeks. Then insert the cuttings 1.5 inches into a light rooting medium of sand or perlite, or a mixture of sand/peat or perlite/peat. It helps to stake them upright, since the leaves are heavy.
