The Q&A Archives: Something is eating my sweet potatoes!

Question: I dug up my sweet potatoes to find literally nothing there! Something has eaten every sweet potato I had. What is eating them? Thanks for your help.

Answer: If you're sure they didn't rot away but instead were consumed, the only likely culprits are gophers and moles. They also like bulbs and other thick plant roots. If this is the problem, growing them in cages of hardware cloth might be your only method of sucessfully harvesting sweet potatoes.
