Answer: Prior to planting bulbs you can add some compost to the planting bed, along with a small amount of slow-release 10-10-10. Dig it in well before planting. Bulbs need a few inches of space in order to have enough room to develop roots and to keep them from competing with one another for adequate nutrients and moisture.
