The Q&A Archives: squirrels eating bulbs

Question: i heard that squirrels dig up and eat tulip bulbs but not daffodils.if i mix tulip and daffodil bulbs, will the squirrels bother them?

Answer: Sounds like a good strategy but the squirrels will mainly dig just to see what you planted. If they happen to find a daffodil bulb, they'll quit exploring. But if they find a tulip, they'll probably continue digging. I'd stretch some chicken wire or hardware cloth or even some permeable weed control cloth over the freshly planted bed. You can remove it in late winter or early spring, after the ground has compacted and before the daffs and tulips begin to sprout. Best wishes with your bulbs!
