The Q&A Archives: Compost

Question: Can you add tomato vines, datura, egg plant and cucumber vines to your compost pile? Or do you absolutely not mix with compost that you would use on next years vegetable garden? If so do you make a separate pile for vegetables? What do you do?

Answer: You can safely compost the plant debris you've mentioned. It should break down without problem, providing you keep your compost heap turned and cooking. The heat generated by the decomposition of the plant material will kill any disease pathogens and insects/insect eggs that might be present in the plant material you compost. The finished compost will be safe to use in next year's vegetable garden.
