Kelly, Healthy turf will choke out most of its weed problems. When the turf is thin and soil is exposed to the sunlight, weeds will sprout and you have a battle on your hands. So first concentrate building a thick, healthy lawn by proper mowing, watering and fertilizing, and you will be amazed at the results. If efforts to improve your stand of turf fail to eliminate all the weeds, a herbicide application may be in order. Just keep in mind that the time to control various weeds and the time to fertilize rarely coincide. Therefore weed and feed combination products are not the best option. In order to effectively control weeds with a herbicide application you should have the weeds identified so an appropriate product can be selected. Your Parish Extension Office can assist you with identifying the weeds and by recommending an appropriate herbicide. |
